Israeli, Italian TV
May Team Up

Rome (JTA) — Fininvest,
Italy's largest commercial
broadcasting company, and
the state-owned Israel Televi-
sion are exploring the
possibility of joint ventures
and coproductions, according
to top officials of both
organizations.
"There is mutual interest
and good intentions," said
Fininvest vice president
Gianni Letta.
An Israel Embassy
spokesman here cautioned
that "everything is on a very
beginning level."
But Israel's ambassador to
Italy, Mordechai Drory,
stressed the potential for
cooperation between the two
countries.
Fininvest's president met
with Israeli Finance Minister
Shimon Peres to discuss joint
ventures when Peres visited
Milan earlier this month to
address the Italian Socialist
Party convention.
A Fininvest delegation is
expected to go to Israel next
month.
Fininvest, which owns Ita-
ly's three main commercial
channels, is trying to shed its
low-brow image of variety
shows and quiz programs. Its
involvement in the Wiesen-
thal biograpical film which
starred Ben Kingsley was a
step in that direction.

Lubavitch Win
In California

Los Angeles (JTA) —
California's Supreme Court
has upheld the right of the
Chabad Lubavitch movement
to place a Chanukah
menorah at the Los Angeles
City Hall, rejecting claims
that the display would violate
the separation of church and
state.
The case arose in December
1985, when Chabad obtained
permission from municipal
authorities to display a 19th-
century Chanukiah, original-
ly used in Polish synagogues,
near a Christmas tree in the
City Hall rotunda.
