[NEWS academic prerequisites in text, Hebrew language and experience in living as a Jew. Rabbi Gordon Tucker, dean of the rabbinical school, ex- plained that previously there were students at the school with limited backgrounds, who entered the seminary as a result of having become in- terested in Judaism during college. "They were sincere and capable . . . but they hadn't sufficient exposure to all the aspects of Jewish life," he said. The admissions require- ment is just one of the many changes in curriculum at JTS. Other changes include fixing the course of study at five years, rather than the previous four- to seven-year term; a seminar which will concentrate on issues of theology, prayer and the im- age of a rabbi; and a field work requirement for the last two years. According to Tucker, the changes were prompted by a desire to integrate learning text with basic rabbinate skills, such as teaching and inspiring others. "The demands placed on to- day's rabbi go far beyond the ability to understand Talmudic passages," said Hamilton. "There are now demands that a rabbi be a people-person." Soviet Aliyah Shows Increase New York (JTA) — The percentage of Soviet Jewish emigres who moved to Israel in May was double the January figure, and the highest since April 1988, Soviet Jewry groups reported last week. The 549 emigres who made aliyah represented 14.5 per- cent of the month's total of 3,779, according to both the National Conference on Soviet Jewry and the Union of Councils for Soviet Jews. Since January, the percen- tage of Soviet Jews choosing Israel over the United States and other countries was no higher than 10 percent. In April 1988, 16.8 percent of the emigres made aliyah. Although 778 fewer Jews emigrated in May than in April, the figure still comes close to the more than 4,000 per month who immigrated during the benchmark year of 1979, according to NCSJ spokesman Jerry Strober. May's figures bring the total number of emigres since January to 17,797, only 1,168 less than the number for all of 1988. WARM WEATHER .. .
