daughters. Fathers no longer tutored sons in the ways of Judaism (sometimes, because they knew no more about the religion than did the sons), but they did expect that sons would go to college and find a profession. Daughters were often an adornment, a trinket. Feminist author Susan Weidman Schneider has written that a daughter "can be the best symbol of the father having made it. If his son goes to an Ivy League school, perhaps the son's own efforts have been involved in some way. If a daughter dresses well, only the father's wealth is responsible." Weidman even blames the over-indulgent Jewish father -- not the Jewish mother — for that spoiled rotten image of the Jewish daughter, the Jewish American Princess. If correct, that could mean that Jewish fathers' roles did not toward daughters have not budged one whit from the days of the Babylonian Talmud, which mused that "a daughter is a vain treasure to her father." But all these changes in the Jewish fathers' role did not mean that they loved their children any less than did more traditional Jewish fathers. In a new land and under new circumstances, they just loved them different- ly. As author Faye Moskowitz said, "My father worked seven days a week, and my moments with him were very precious. I loved him without question and knew he loved me without question and I didn't question that love." Moskowitz especially recall- ed the special alliance bet- ween her and her father. When she misbehaved, Moskowitz's mother would frequently say, "Wait until you're father gets home. He'll kill you." said often," "But Moskowitz, "he didn't 'kill' me. He was my ally and would often complain with me about my mother." The "New" Jewish Father Starting in the late 1960s, the role of the father in America began to change. The shift continued through the next decade and quicken- ed in the 1980s. Much of this was fed by the women's move- ment and the rise of the two- income family: Feminist demands for equality were eventually concurrent with the bottom-line of family economics. Jewish dads were frequent- ly in the vanguard of fathers open to new roles. This occur- PART OF A LARGE COLLECTION OF GEORGIAN SILVER COLLECTION. 409 E.
