os Angeles — Leaders
of two rival Jewish
militant groups spat at
each other, shouted insults
and nearly came to blows at
the international airport in
Los Angeles during a press
conference called last week to
denounce anti-Semitic
violence.
The combatants were
Mordechai Levy, head of the
New York-based Jewish
Defense Organization, and
Iry Rubin, national chairman
of the Jewish Defense League.
Levy said he had flown to
Los Angeles in response to a
recent of a couple they
mistakenly identified as
Jewish by skinheads. When
Levy finally got a chance to
be heard, he called on
synagogues to form armed
militias to combat skinheads.
Before that, however. the
two militants engaged in a
spitting and shouting match
with Rubin and a handful of
followers yelling at Levy "Go
back to New York! You're a

fraud! You're a scumbag!"
Levy countered with
"You're a drug dealer!" while
pushing past his antagonists
with fists clenched.
The scene was played out
before a group of bemused
reporters who had come for
the Levy press conference and
the shouting match was
broadcast live by a radio
station.
Levy is a former JDL
member and was either kick-
ed out or left after complain-
ing that Rubin and the JDL
had gone soft and weren't
militant enough. The two
men have been bitter rivals
since.
Jerry Shapiro, assistant
director of the local Anti-
Defamation League, told
reporters that "I can't say I'm
at all surprised to see this
thing turn into the melee
that apparently it was."
He
added
that
"mainstream Jewish
organization long ago
distanced themselves from
the JDO and JDL as a result
of their methods."

Can't Remove Convent,
Polish Prelate States

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The rank-
ing Roman Catholic prelate
in Poland claims he is
powerless to remove a
Carmelite convent from the
grounds of the former
Auschwitz death camp
because the nuns refuse to
leave, according to the presi-
dent of the Women's Interna-
tional Zionist Organization.
Raya Yaglom met with
Polish Cardinal Franciszek
Macharski, one of the car-
dinals who signed an agree-
ment in February 1987 that
the convent would be re-
located in two years.
"We spoke for two hours,
and after much pressure he
admitted he had signed the
undertaking but was in-
capable of carrying it out,"
Yaglom said.
"He justified this by
repeating over and over that
he had not expected the nuns
to be so recalcitrant and that
he had anyway received tens
of thousands of letters from
Polish Catholics who wanted
the convent left where it was,"
Yaglom reported.
She arrived in Israel after
leading a 300-member inter-
national WIZO delegation on
a study tour of Holocaust
sites in Poland.

They staged a demonstra-
tion at the Auschwitz site to
protest the continued
presence of the convent
The women stood in silence,
holding up Israeli flags,
WIZO banners and signs
reading, "Get the Carmelite
Convent Out Of Auschwitz."
Meanwhile, the Federation
of Polish Jews in the United
States said this week that it
will demand suspension of
Catholic-Jewish dialogue if a
Carmelite convent built on
the grounds of the former
Auschwitz death camp is not
removed.
The federation claimed that
the furor aroused by the con-
vent deterred plans by the
Catholic Capuchin order to
build a chapel on the site of
Sobibor, another death camp
in Poland, all of whose in-
mates were Jews.
The federation specifically
held Polish Cardinal Fran-
ciszek Macharski "chiefly
responsible" for the continued
failure to remove the convent
from Auschwitz.
The Federation said that
any further delay in im-
plementing the agreement
would leave it no choice but to
demand suspension of the
Catholic-Jewish dialogue.
