NEWS I Veto By U.S. Cheers Israel New York (JTA) — The U.S. veto last week a United Na- tions Security Council resolu- tion condemning Israel "shows once again that the U.S. and Israel are allies," a spokesman for Israel's U.N. mission said. Barukh Binah said he was not surprised that the other 14 members of the Security Council all voted in favor of the resolution or by the state- ment's strong language. The Security Council resolution harshly condemn- ed Israel for actions "which violate the human rights of the Palestinian people in the occupied territory." The 14-1 vote took place Friday at a Security Council session requested by Sudan on behalf of the Arab League. Thomas Pickering, U.S. am- bassador to the United Na- tions, said the United States vetoed the resolution because it was "unbalanced." He said the statement made no men- tion of "serious acts of violence" by Palestinians. Jewish Students Protest Force Jerusalem (JTA) — The World Union of Jewish Students has protested in strong terms against the "in- discriminate use of force by the Chinese government" on students in Beijing. WUJS, which has 200,000 members in 40 countries, an- nounced Monday that it sent the protest to Chinese em- bassies all over the world. The WUJS statement said the organization "condemns in the strongest terms the use of indiscriminate force by the Chinese government and military again,-. unarmed Chinese students and others calling for democracy." It urged the Chinese government "to immediately cease all military and police actions and to enter into negotiations with the students."
