FRIDAY, JUNE 9, 1989

He's mentally retarded. But he
has the same interests the same
wants and needs that any boy
does.
There are 6 million mentally re-
tarded citizens in America. 6 mil-
lion sons and daughters who
want to go to public schools,
who want to work and want to
live useful, happy lives. It's up to
us to make sure they get those
opportunities.
So, please, help us. You'// be

helping 6 million Americans who
desperately need you

Detroit Teens Attend
NCSY Regional Event

JARC

28366 Franklin Rd.
Southfield, MI 48034
(313) 352-5272

he National Confer-
ence of Synagogue
Youth (NCSY), held its
21st annual regional conven-
tion over Memorial Day
weekend at Camp Wise near
Cleveland, Ohio. About 180
Jewish teens from all over the
Central East Region attend-
ed, from Detroit, Cincinnati,
Columbus, Dayton, In-
dianapolis, Pittsburgh and
Louisville. It was a weekend
of good times and friends, a
weekend to learn and
discover.
Out of 25 NCSYers graduat-
ing this year, 23 have decid-
ed to further their Jewish
education in religious institu-
tions in New York and Israel.
A day of sporting activities
served as a successful "ice-
breaker"; we were no longer
separate chapters, but united
as one region.
We prepared ourselves for
the spirit of Shabbat with
singing and dancing to
Jewish music accompanied by
the NCSY band, Segulah. An
NCSY Shabbat is unlike any
other; it's truly amazing.
We learned about the im-
portance of the three crowns
in Judaism: Ketter Malchut,
Ketter Kahuna and Ketter
Torah in discussion groups led
by our talented NCSY ad-
visers. We learned not only
about them but how they are
involved in our daily lives.
Sunday was spent outdoors
enjoying the beautiful
grounds of Camp Wise and in
preparation for the Sunday
night event, the banquet and
awards ceremony.
Detroit's Emes/YIT Chap-
ter received five awards. Ari
Schochet, candidate for na-
tional president of NCSY,
received a presidential cita-
tion "for his contributions to
the region." Abby Eisenberg
received a social action award
"for all her contributions to
YIT and to her Yachad
chapter." Gabi Albert and
Ester Bodzin received Torah
Achievement Awards "for
their growth in Judaism."
Noam Koenigsberg, past
regional vice president of
education of the Central East
Region, received the NCSYer
of the Year Award.
