process which resulted in the
first Torah commentary from
a liberal point of view.
He explained how Reform
Jewish day schools may differ
from their Conservative and
Orthodox counterparts. The
Reform day school recognizes
the full equality of men and
women in Jewish life and
"the validity of non-Orthodox
Judaism in its determination
to insist that Judaism is not
something which is frozen but
Judaism is something which
is continuously developing."
At the same time, Reform
Jewish day school students
are not only encouraged to
observe mitzvot and ritual,
but to be ethical in both their
communal and personal lives.
Where Conservative and Or-
thodox day school students
may spend half a day on
secular subjects and the other
half on Jewish subjects,
Schindler sees the Reform
day school "integrating"
Jewish material into all sub-
jects, such as incorporating
Jewish literature into a
general literature class.
"Jewish education
shouldn't be compartment-
alized," he said. "We want
subject matter as much as
possible to be integrated.
There has to be a total in-
tegration so that they (the
students) see Jewish life is
part of general life."
Another advantage of the
day schools, Schindler
predicted, will be the develop-
ment of techniques and
materials that will be useful
across the Jewish education
spectrum.
"What is developed by the
(Reform) day schools may be
used by adult education or in
camps or in the home.
Whatever is good for one
kind of education and will be
good for every other kind of
education." ❑
