The settlers feel that the
government and army are not
doing enough to protect them
from the rock-throwing and
other forms of violence
generated by the Palestinian
population; the army worries
that the settlers are increas-
ingly emboldened to seek to
take matters into their own
hands.
Each day one reads of the
escalation of the deadly spiral
of violence and revenge, with
Palestinians murdering their
own people, suspected of be-
ing informants, and personal-
ly attacking Jewish civilians,
while Jewish settlers have set
fire to Arab homes.
Extremism on the left and
the right is growing, and the
resulting strain on Israeli
society sometimes seems too
great to withstand. One can
only urge restraint and
pragmatism on all sides, and
hope that Israelis will pull
together under the canopy of
a common commitment to
both Jewish survival and
democratic ideals.
