Brussels (JTA) — The Euro- pean Community has asked Israel to re-open Palestinian schools in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, which were shut down as a security measure. The 12 E.C. member states, currently chaired by Spain, issued a joint statement last week expressing their "serious concern" over the "persistent decision" of the Israeli authorities to keep the schools closed. The stated reason was that the schools, particularly high schools and colleges, were hotbeds of Palestinian na- tionalism and the source of violent demonstrations. Arab universities, high schools and elementary schools have been closed dur- ing most of the 17 months of the Palestinian uprising, by order of the Israeli military authorities. The E.C. statement read: "The Twelve consider that this measure, which is con- trary to the basic right to education, threatens the future of a whole generation of young Palestinians and contributes to increase the level of tension in the oc- cupied territories, thus obstructing the task of building confidence which, in the view of the Twelve, is essential if the peace process is to prosper." ENROLL YOUR CHILD NOW! During the coming week Yeshiva Beth Yehudah will observe the yahrzeits of the following departed friends, with the traditional memorial prayers, recitation of kaddish and studying of mishnayos.
