Sharansky One Of 11 JWB Award Winners New York (JTA) — Memoirs by Soviet Jewry activist Natan Sharansky and a study of black-Jewish relations by Jonathan Kaufman were among 11 recipients of 1989 National Jewish Book Awards of the JWB Jewish Book Council. The awards, which consist of a cash prize and a cer- tificate of recognition, were presented in ceremonies on May 30 at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan. Sharansky, who spent nine years in the Soviet gulag before immigrating to Israel in 1986, won the award in the category of autobiography/memoir for his book Fear No Evil, published by Random House. Kaufman, a reporter for the Boston Globe, won the Muriel and Phil Berman Award in the category of contemporary Jewish life for Broken Alliance: The Turbulent Times Between Blacks and Jews in America (Charles Scribners & Sons). Israeli author Aharon Ap- pelfeld won in the fiction category for his latest novel, The Immortal Bartfus (Weidenfeld Nicolson). Sharansky's Kin Flown To Israel New York (JTA) — The ail- ing mother of Avital Sharan- sky was airlifted on a stret- cher out of Moscow last week and flown via London to Israel, where she is now a pa- tient at Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem. The personal rescue opera- tion of Svetlana Stiglits in- volved an international cast that included a rabbi, travel agents, doctors, the Soviet Embassy in Washington, the U.S. State Department and the New York State Police. Stiglits first applied to the Soviet authorities for a visitor's visa a year and half ago, after her husband died. The American doctor who accompanied her out of Moscow said he thought her combined physical and men- tal condition would have kill- ed her in another week. She was described as "62, but looking like 85." Her prognosis is unknown at this time.
