Emanuel Lurie was a junior physicist working at the Moscow Institute of Organic Chemistry when he and his wife, their two daughters and Judith Lurie's mother applied in 1979 to emigrate to Israel. At the end of December 1979, they all received permission. They made all the necessary arrangements to depart, and both Luries left their jobs. Six weeks later, as Emanuel Lurie returned home after buying train tickets, he received a call asking him to report to OVIR, the Soviet emigration office. An OVIR official told Lurie a mistake had been made. His documents had been recheck- ed and showed that Lurie had once been employed in "classifield work." Lurie argued that he had left this job 16 years before and had since worked only in "open" establishments. Yet his visa was confiscated, and only his mother-in-law allowed to leave.
