Volunteer
Continued from preceding page
for one or two hours.
"There is a beautiful
association between the pro-
fessional staff and the
volunteers. The volunteers
are very committed and show
up through rain and snow."
While most of the volunteer
involvement is during
visiting hours, some of the
women help with feeding and
bathing in the early morning.
One volunteer trained to
work in the intensive care
unit helped take care of the
Wilson quintuplets that were
born at Sinai in January.
"Baby Girl C (Elizabeth
Ashley Wilson) was my
favorite because she was up
all the time," says Jane
Stevens. A medical secretary
at Sinai, Stevens volunteers
after work every Friday
night.
"I saw a picture of Hope
Silverman in the Sinai
newsletter and decided to put
in an application," says
Stevens. "My mother was a
hospital volunteer so I grew
up with it. I love babies and
didn't want any more of my
own so this is perfect for me.
I like Sinai and would do
anything I could for them."
Silverman agrees. "I like
supporting my Jewish
hospital. I have a professional
partnership with the staff
and I'm not taking anyone's
job. I'm a pair of helping
hands?'
As she smiled and touched
the baby's fragile fingers,
Silverman added, "I can't
think of anything better to be
hooked on than voluntarism.
It's a great feeling to be need-
ed." ID
