Christmas Cruise
ABOARD the REGENT SUN
Print Exhibit
At The DIA
An exhibition that con-
trasts black and white small-
scale prints of the early 20th
Century with the large-scale
color works of recent decades
now occupies the Schwartz
Graphic Arts Galleries at the
Detroit Institute of Arts.
"Twentieth Century Prints
and Drawings from the Per-
manent Collection" will be on
view through July 30.
In the display, the works of
George Bellows, John Sloan,
Grant Wood and John Marin
can be studied in relation to
those of leading contem-
porary printmakers like
Jasper Johns, Helen Frank-
enthaler, Chuck Close, Alex
Katz and Edward Ruscha.
Another emphasis is placed
on prints issued in series or in
portfolios. Among them are
Jazz (1947) by Henri Matisse,
20 screenprints in colors and
Album 13 (1948) by Joan
Miro, 13 lithographs.
The exhibition also features
new acquisitions of contem-
porary prints and drawings,
especially Robert
Rauschenberg's Bellini series,
inspired by a series of five
allegorical panel paintings in
the Accademia in Venice.
The exhibition is open to
the public without charge
during regular museum
hours: Tuesday through Sun-
day, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, art critic
Theodore F. Wolff will speak
on "Lasting Impressions:
20th Century Prints,
1930-1988" at 8 p.m. June 14
in the museum lecture mall.
The event is open to the
public at a nominal fee. It is
free to sponsoring members of
the Graphic Arts Council.

woven on backstrap looms.
The Mayans have long been
