NEWS UOJCA Clarifies Its Position On Abortion New York (JTA) — The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of American is distancing itself from an in- terfaith brief it signed that urges the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold a woman's right to decide whether or not to have an abortion. According to Rabbi Pinchas Stolper, executive vice presi- dent of the Orthodox Union, a brief his organization sign- ed as a member of the Na- tional Jewish Community Relations Advisory Council inaccurately implies that the Orthodox Union supports "absolute freedom of reproductive choice!" NJCRAC is writing to the Supreme Court "to correct any possible misunderstan- dings," according to a state- ment issued by the umbrella organization. The brief was filed last month and asked that the Supreme Court strike down a controversial Missouri law that, if upheld, would severe- ly restrict a woman's right to an abortion in that state. It also asked the court to uphold Roe vs. Wade, the 1973 landmark Supreme Court decision that affirmed a woman's right to an abortion. The court heard oral arguments on the Missouri case last month. The brief argues that since different religions have con- trasting views on abortion, "state statutes drastically curtailing access to abortion unacceptably interfere with constitutionally protected religious and private cons- cience." It acknowledged that there is a wide range of opinion in the Jewish community on the issue. At the time of the NJCRAC brief, a source at the Or- thodox Union told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that his organization had signed the brief "with enthusiasm," because it accurately reflected the "Jewish reverence for life:' NJCRAC admitted, in a statement, that a "last- minute revision" of the brief might be understood as im- plying that the Orthodox Union had taken a more "liberal approach" on abor- tion than had other Orthodox groups. Chernin said, however, that despite the correction, the thrust of the original brief re- mains the same, and that NJCRAC still maintains, as its statement puts it, that "the religious and moral issues raised by abortion should not be resolved by government fiat!" But Chernin said the Or- thodox Union retains the right to dissent or abstain from further NJCRAC statements on abortion or other issues. Italy Upgrades PLO's Status Rome (JTA) — Italy's Chamber of Deputies last week approved a motion rais- ing the status of the Palestine Liberation Organization's representation in Rome from "information office" to "general delegation of Palestine." The measure, proposed by Foreign Minister Giulio An- dreotti, was seen by some as a step toward Italy's possible recognition of the Palestinian state proclaimed in Algiers last year. But others, including An- dreotti, maintained it was a compromise. One of the great motivating forces in my life is uniqueness. As an actress uniqueness is impor- tant, because acting is more .than just role-playing. It requires being able to expose a quality that is uniquely you. In other areas of my life, I look for uniqueness. Even in my decaffeinated coffee. Sanka® Brand Decaffeinated Coffee is unique, because it's the only leading, national brand that is naturally decaffeinated with pure water and nature's own sparkling effervescence. So, not only is Sanka® smooth-tasting, but it addresses my concerns about caffeine and food that is naturally processed. All of us have the poten- tial to be unique. All we need is to experience that part of us that's different and enjoyable. For me, it can be a challenging role in a new play, or something as simple as relaxing with a cup of Sanka® Uniqueness ...there are so many ways to enjoy it! 0 ,4 CDI KOSHER GENERAL FOODS IT'S FUR STORAGE TIME at MALTER FURS MOVING TO WEST BLOOMFIELD IN JULY WITH STORAGE VAULT ON PREMISES.
