TV Show
Sparks Reunion

New York (JTA) —
Holocaust survivor Ernest
Michel's appearance on a
"CBS This Morning" seg-
ment commemorating the
50th anniversary of Kristall-
nacht has led to a reunion of
his old community.
During the program,
Michel, executive vice presi-
dent of United Jewish
Appeal-Federation of Jewish
Philanthropies in New York,
said that he came from the
German town of Mannheim,
south of Frankfurt.
Back at his office after the
show, Michel's secretary told
him, "There is a man on the
phone calling from Dayton,
Ohio, saying he went to school
with you."
The man was Robert Kahn,
an old friend from Mannheim
who had seen Michel on
television. "We played soccer
together . . . and belonged to
the youth choir in the
synagogue," Michel fondly
noted.
CBS, upon hearing of the
conversation, offered to fly
Kahn to New York for a live
reunion on the news show the
next week. The idea of a
general reunion was also
broached.
Of the 6,000-member
Jewish community, none re-
main in Mannheim. There
are some Jews now in the
German town, Michel said,
but "they are all from
Eastern Europe who have
settled there."
The Mannheim reunion
will take place June 14-17 at
Kutscher's Country CLub in
upstate New York.
