Last January, the Center
held an adult floor hockey
tournament which drew eight
teams and more than 80 par-
ticipants. She said this is
another direction in which
the Center could expand.
Boxing shows, too, may
return on a regular basis to
the Maple/Drake Building. A
United States vs. Canada box-
ing tourney — the first held in
seven years — is scheduled
June 17 between Golden
Gloves competitors from the
Kronk gym in Detroit and a
Canadian team.
Center members Ed and
Shirley Rosenberg provided a
$1 million gift to fund the
complex and increased it to
$1.25 million to cover the con-
struction costs, according to
Mort Plotnick, Center ex-
ecutive director. ❑
Akiba Takes Crown
In AZA Loop Playoffs
11°
Akiba of Windsor defeated
drastically undermanned
L'Chaim Jihad of Detroit,
64-44, Sunday at the
Maple/Drake Jewish Com-
munity Center to win the
Great Lakes Council AZA
Basketball League Playoff
tournament championship.
L'Chaim Jihad had earned
the championship game berth
by defeating Chalut-
zim/Strauss, 44-38, in the
Great Lakes Division playoff
contest immediately before
the title game.
Because of prior com-
mitments of some team
members, Jihad had only five
players for the playoffs. The
team decided against drafting
two players for the playoffs, a
move offered by the AZA
Council staff, and found itself
with only four players in the
fourth quarter against Akiba
when Brian Shapiro fouled
out.
Jihad's Marc Jacobs led all
scorers with 26 points in the
championship, but Akiba
countered with 17 points from
Scott Zack, 14 from Marc
Nakisher, 12 by Josh Cascade
and nine by Brian Feldman.
In the Great Lakes divi-
sional title game, Jacobs
scored 15 points to lead
L'Chaim Jihad. Chalut-
zim/Strauss stayed in the
game with Brian Silverman
scoring 15 points and Jeff
Klein 11.
Akiba, which added the
Council tourney crown to the
regional convention title it
won last December, came
from behind to defeat Herzl,
42-30, to win the Michigan
Division playoff contest which
opened the tourney.
Akiba's Cascade ripped the
nets for 22 points while
limiting Herzl scoring ace
Josh Polsky to only four
points. Herzl's Alex Gorelick,
who finished with 14 points,
singlehandedly got the team
off to a 9-0 lead.
The AZA All-Star Game,
pitting Council champion
Akiba against a selection of
the league's top players, will
be 4 p.m. Sunday at
Maple/Drake.
Israelis To Take On
Big East Teams
Tucson, Ariz. (JTA) —
Israel's men's national
basketball team will be corn-
ing to the United States in
the fall to play a series of ex-
hibition games against
several college teams.
But while arrangements for
the tour were made by Rabbi
Mitchell Smith, director of
the Hillel Foundation at the
University of Arizona,
scheduling difficulties made a
visit to Arizona impossible.
Instead, they'll play a
schedule of six Big East Con-
ference teams, including
Seton Hall, GeOrgetown
University and Syracuse
University.
Smith is disappointed the
Israelis won't be meeting the
Arizona Wildcats, but is
hopeful that matches can be
arranged for the fall of 1990.
Smith says he had a three-
fold aim in arranging for the
team to come.
"One was frankly Zionist —
basketball is great diplomacy;
second, it is an exciting event
for basketball fans; and third
it's a creative way of raising
funds for Hillel, which is
financially strapped?"
For its role in coordinating
the fall matches, U.A. Hillel
will receive a percentage of
the gate receipts for the series
of games.
Smith wrote to a number of
conferences around the coun-
try about hosting the Israelis.
Big East Conference Commis-
sioner Dave Gavitt jumped at
the chance.
