Synagogue Is Firebombed San Francisco (JTA) — San Francisco police increased surveillance at synagogues and other Jewish buildings last week after apparently anti-Semitic incidents in which a firebomb damaged an entrance to Congregation Beth Sholom and excrement was smeared on the Holocaust Memorial in Lin- coln Park. A police spokesman said in- vestigators believe the in- cidents may have been the work of the same person or persons, since they occurred around the same time. The firebombing caused about $300 in damage at Beth Sholom on 14th Avenue in the Richmond District. Fire officials said the fire broke out at 12:37 a.m. when a plastic bottle filled with gasoline and ignited with a paper wick was thrown against a wooden side door. The desecration of the Holocaust Memorial, next to the Palace of Legion of Honor, was discovered later that mor- ning by volunteer caretaker Roger Grimes, who noticed what appeared to be dried mud on statues of Eve and other biblical figures. Closer inspection revealed that the figures had been covered with feces. Officials of the Anti- Defamation League of B'nai B'rith in San Francisco said they have given police infor- mation on activities of local Skinheads, who they believe may have been involved. The police spokesman, who asked not to be named, agreed with Jewish leaders that the anti-Semitic in- cidents could have been spawned by television coverage of the Holocaust in programs such as the mini- series "War and Remem- brance." HUC Builds A New Center Los Angeles — The Hebrew Union College Skirball Cultural Center will be con- structed on a 15-acre site in the Santa Monica Mountains, between the westside of Los Angeles and the San Fernan- do Valley. According to Dr. Uri D. Herscher, executive vice- president of HUC-JIR, the center is scheduled to open in the fall of 1991. The cultural center will house the Skirball Museum, the 350-seat Rabbi Edgar F. Magnin Auditorium, a con- ference center and • an outreach program.
