Each month in this space, L'Chayim will look back into issues of The Jewish News to see what was happening in the local Jewish community or in the Diaspora 10, 20 and 40 years ago. TEN YEARS AGO Thirty students invaded the New York offices of Ford Motor Co. demanding that the company fire a Cleveland worker, Ivan Demjanjuk, who they alleged was a Nazi camp guard at Treblinka. Detroit attorney Avern Cohn and former Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Stewart Newblatt were nominated by President Carter for Federal District Court judgeships. Knesset. Evelyn Orbach was elected vice chairman of the Interfaith Broadcasting Commission of Greater Detroit. 20 YEARS AGO The State of Israel was admitted to the United Nations. Abraham Satovsky was re- elected president of the men's club of Congregation Shaarey Zedek. A bill naming Israel's basic currency the shekel, instead of lira or pound, was introduced into the 40 YEARS AGO A Midrash When Moshe was about to receive the Torah, the angels raised their voices in protest, "God, such a special gift You give to the humans! How can You be sure that they will appreciate the preciousness of Your holy teachings? What will they offer as a guarantee that these words will be treasured forever?" God listened to the angels and understood their concern. So God spoke to Moshe and asked, "How can I comfort the angels, they worry so? Give them a sign that the Torah will always be dear to you and to all of Israel." Moshe thought — "perhaps I can tell them that based on the good deeds of our ancestors, we should be trusted? Or maybe, because our prophets were so loyal? No, I must provide them with a promise worthy of this magnificent gift. What is it that we Jews value above all else? Ah, our children!" So it was, the Midrash says, that Moshe was able to comfort the angels. And Moshe received the Torah and he brought it to the children of Israel.
