look at her schedule dispells
that self-analytic statement.
During the last three years in
L.A., in addition to the
"Sonya Live In L.A." show,
she has creted two already-
optioned series scripts and
has written an after-school
special, all for television. She
has invested in a movie, now
on hold, but "at least as good
as Fatal Attraction and, until
last August, had a twice-
weekly radio program in New
York. In addition, she is
negotiating with CBS for a
documentary.
In April, she volunteered to
speak to a newly-formed
single parents group at Tem-
ple Israel, where she is a
member, and has offered to
meet monthly, with this
group, free of charge. She has
also been a volunteer speaker
for many years at Rev. Jack
Boland's Unity Church in
Warren. She recently address-
ed a Displaced Homemaker's
meeting in Las Vegas and is
a consultant to the Make A
Wish Foundation for
terminally-ill children.
As her friend, Joan Peven
Smith, has said: "She's there
for everybody. I don't know
how she does it."
Retirement plans in Dr.
Friedman's future? Don't
even think about it because,
as she is quick to tell you,
"Everygody wants the secret
of youth or secret of life and
that's to stay in the present
with one toe in the future."
Friedman's agenda includes
an attempt to have her CNN
show moved to New York, a
return to radio in the Detroit
area if the right opportunity
presents itself, like a news
program with a psychological
bent, and a possible return to
Oakland University where
she maintains an associate
professorship.
She loves her job with CNN
and is proud of a format that
includes world and financial
news, interviews, nutrition
and cooking. She is proud too
that her show is telecast
throughout 60 countries. Her
job, she labels, "a privilege .. .
I am thrilled not to be asked
to behave badly to get
ratings." She has used her
veto power of guests only
three times in three years.
Her all-time-favorite guest
is Roots author Alex Haley,
who, Friedman thinks, "is
bright, sensitive, courageous,
deeply devoted and invested
in his cause and what he does.
He has a real sense of mission
to make the world a better
place."
"I do believe," Friedman
say, "that everybody is here
with a potential of fulfilling
something that makes the
world better."
