Helen Suzman's steadfast
refusal to embrace positions
simply because they were
fashionable was
demonstrated during a recent
visit to London following her
participation at a women's
conference in Israel.
At a meeting organized by
the Orthodox - Yakar move-
ment in the North London
suburb of Hendon, she
outraged the enthusiastic
anti-apartheid campaigners
who were busily handing out
leaflets demanding a boycott
of all South African goods:
Politely but firmly, she
reminded those who felt a
surge of moral righteousness
when they refused to buy a
South African orange that a
quarter-million black workers
relied on the citrus industry
for their livelihood.
Then, to the unconcealed
fury of a black representative
of the African National Con-
gress (ANC), she proceeded to
lambaste the campaign for
economic sanctions and
disinvestment.
Polls which indicated that
more than 70 percent of
South African blacks favored
sanctions were flawed, she
said. When the same people
were asked whether they
were prepared to sacrifice
their jobs, those supporting
sanctions fell to 17 percent.
She also pointed to the
"unexpected consequences"
of sanctions. The interna-
tional arms embargo, for ex-
ample, had provided the in-
spiration for South Africa to
develop its own, highly
sophisticated arms industry.
lbday, Pretoria is a major pro-
ducer and exporter of arms.
Helen Suzman sympathized
with those who wanted ins-
tant change: "If I were black,"
she said, "I'd want change
and want it fast. But impa-
tience for change should not
blind people to harsh reality"
Armed revolution would
simply allow the South
African government to
unleash even more firepower
against blacks, and if the
blacks did eventually win a
long, bloody and agonizing
armed struggle, they would
inherit an economy and a
society that had been
destroyed in the process.
Black people in South
Africa, she counseled, should
concentrate their energies on
the task of building up
"economic muscle" through
training and access to skilled
jobs which would, in turn,
give them a powerful weapon
to use against the regime.

For that reason, she hoped
that American and European
corporations would not heed
the calls to disinvest, but
rather stay in South Africa
where their social, educa-
tional, medical, welfare and
housing programs for employ-
ees had already achieved a
considerable impact.
When these companies
disinvested and were taken
over by South Africans, she
said, many of the social-
suppport programs were
unceremoniously dumped.
Helen Suzman has cam-
paigned long and hard for the
unconditional release of ANC
leader Nelson Mandela,
whom she has visited regular-
ly during his 25-year
incarceration.
Like many others in the
anti-apartheid crusade, she
believes that Mandela has a
significant role to play in
helping South Africa along
the path of non-violent, evolu-
tionary change.
At the same time, she does
not harbor illusions that ma-
jor structural reform is immi-
nent. Rather, she is preparing
for the long haul: "Change,"
she says, "will take longer
than many people think."

Syrian Group
Issues Threat

Jerusalem (JTA) — A
Syrian-based terrorist group
has threatened the lives of
West Bank Palestinians who
met with members of an
American diplomatic mission
here last week.
The threat was broadcast
on the Syrian radio station Al
Kuds by the Popular Front for
the Liberation of Palestine-
General Command, a faction
headed by Ahmed Jabril that
is opposed to Yassir Arafat's
leadership of the Palestine
Liberation Organization. Al
Kuds is the Arabic name for
Jerusalem.
The warning was unam-
biguous. After naming the
Palestinians who attended
the meeting, the broadcaster
said, "The judgment of the
people shall be meted out." It
added, "Those who went to
this meeting should know
that our people are lying in
wait to ambush them."
The American group was
headed by Dennis Ross, direc-
tor of policy planning at the
State Department.
