The People for the
American Way, the watchdog
group that keeps track of the
Christian Right, has issued
warnings about what the
group sees as a virulently
anti-Semitic group.
The National Prayer Net-
work, an electronic ministry
headquartered in Oregon,
currently broadcasts a week-
ly radio program on a
Washington Christian sta-
tion. The group is headed by
Claude Pike.
"Our main concern is that
he is distributing some real-
ly awful anti-Semitic
material," said Jim Castelli,
church-state director for Peo-
ple for the American Way.
"But he is doing it in the
guise of being just another
conservative evangelical
Christian. There is an in-
sidious quality about his
material that concerns us:'
One particular target of the
group is the current "hate
crimes" statistics bill. Accor-
ding to one brochure, the bill,
which mandates the collec-
tion of information about
crimes based on the victim's
race, religion or sexual orien-
tation, would "redefine 'pre-
judice' so as to make the
Christian a lawbreaker."
"There is a real distortion of
what the bill is all about,"
Castelli said. "And it's all tied
into this notion of a
worldwide Jewish conspir-
acy."

AJCommittee
Takes On
Embassy Row

The American Jewish Corn-
mittee met in Washington
last week for some heavy ses-
sions on a wide range of
domestic and international
01°- issues.
And in a new wrinkle for
Washington "missions" by
Jewish groups, participants
OP
fanned out along Embassy
Row, visiting representatives
of some 21 countries.
"We decided that the times
require a more activist
posture," said David Harris,
the group's Washington
representative. "There's too
much happening in the Mid-
dle East, in the area of East-
West relations, for us to con-
fine ourselves to internal
debates. And the increasing
quest of the [Palestine Libera-
tion Organization] for

ciuding the escalating arms
race in the Middle East.
At the Greek embassy, AJ
Committee representatives
expressed their strong con-
cern about that government's
attitudes toward interna-
tional terrorism; in a meeting
with Hungary's ambassador,
delegates were informed that
current bilateral ties between
that country and Israel would
probably result in full
diplomatic relations by the
end of the year.
"Frankly, we're exhilarated
by what happened," Harris
said. "We were very well
received — in most cases by
the ambassadors themselves.
The Chinese embassy actual-
ly complained that we didn't
spend enough time there."

Project Judaica
Gives Help
To Polish Scholar

Dr. Jozef A. Gierowski was
in town recently to help pro-
mote his Center on Jewish
History and Culture in
Poland — a project that was
developed with help from the
Washington-based Project
Judaica.
Gierowski, who is not
Jewish, heads a massive ef-
fort to build a archive of
Jewish culture in Poland.
"We are working with
Hebrew University and the
University of Connecticut to
prepare a very exact catalog
of all the materials concern-
ing the history and culture of
Jews," he said. 0

According to Harris, some
delegations focused on the
current Israeli plan for elec-
tions, while others brought up
a wide range of issues — in-
