Reconstructionists Accept Gay Group New York (JTA) — Bet Haverim, a 75-member gay- lesbian congregation, has become the first Reconstruc- - tionist congregation in Atlan- ta, and the first gay-lesbian congregation in the Recon- structionist movement Founded four years ago, Bet Haverim had its membership application approved at the January board meeting of the Reconstructionist Federation. Rabbi Mordecai Liebling, executive director of the Federation of Reconstruc- tionist Congregations and Havurot, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that the Atlanta congregation was one of 64 Reconstructionist con- gregations in North America. Liebling said that after the Bet Haverim application was received, he met with a • number of members in Atlan- "We probably have a dozen gay and lesbian congregations already (in the UAHC)." to to explore the possible rela- tionship, as he does for all ap- plying congregations. While Bet Haverim applied only to the Reconstructionist movement for membership, it invited a Reform represen- tative to address the congregation. The reason for inviting spokesmen for both groups was based on conflicting motives, Bet Haverim of- ficials told Richard Bono, an Atlanta Jewish Times staff writer. Gary Piccola, an Atlanta psychologist who is im- mediate past president and a founder of Beth Haverim, said that in regard to affilia- tion, "We like to do our own thing." He added that affilia- tion would "have to be with a group that encourages autonomy." Sherry Emory, Bet Haverim president, invited Rabbi Frank Sundheim, regional director of the Union of American Hebrew Congrega- tions, to address the congreg- tion. The UAHC is the na- tional representative agency of North American Reform congregations. Sundheim said the UAHC was a "pioneer in pushing for acceptance of gays and les- bians in the Jewish communi- ty." He told Bono — "We pro- bably have a dozen gay and lesbian congregations already (in the UAHC)." Sundheim and Liebling met separately with the congrega- tion. Liebling told a group of Bet Haverim members at a member's home last July that the Reconstructionist move- ment "welcomes gays and les- bians." Liebling told the Bet Haverim members that only the Reconstructionist Rab- binical College accepts and trains gays and lesbians for the rabbinate. Sundheim was quoted as saying that the question of or- daining gays and lesbians for the Reform rabbinate remain- ed under discussion within the Central Conference of American Rabbis, the Reform rabbinical group. The other reason for con- sidering affilition, Piccola said, was a need to organize the congregation before it became too large to manage effectively. He said, "It would probably have been helpful years ago if we had somebody to tell us how to set up a budget. We're discovering these things on our own. It would have been easier if we had help." Museum Wins $5,000 Prize Amsterdam (JTA) — The Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam has been award- ed $5,000 as winner of the 1989 European Museum Prize. The 57-year-old institution, which was looted by the Nazis during World War II, is the first museum in the Netherlands ever to receive the prize, which was established by the Strasbourg-based Council of Europe. The museum was cited for the unique manner in which it presents Jewish culture as part of Dutch culture. The Jewish Historical Museum was founded in 1932 by a group of local Jewish intellectuals. The museum survived the German occupation, but was not reopened until 1955, in its original premises, on the up- per floor of an ancient building. Subsequently, the Amster- dam municipality took it over. In 1978, plans were made to expand the museum and transfer it to much larger quarters. Now we can see it before you can feel it.
