Prof. Norris was cited for "his lifelong commitment to civil liberties and social justice and his active celebra- tion of these critical democratic values in a body of published and memorable verse." His poem, The Liberty Bell, was especially honored for its placement in Independence National Monument Park in Philadelphia on the occasion of the American Bicentennial and in the Michigan State Capitol Building in Lansing.
