His mother, Avra, is a choir member of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, a guest and substitute cantor in the metropolitan area and works at Laszlo's. Two brothers: David, 22, is a graduate of the University of Michigan; Jeffrey, 21, attends the business school at University of Michigan. His grand- parents Sandor and Elizabeth Weiss and Ruth Coblentz reside in Southfield. EDUCATION: A 1989 graduate of West Bloomfield High School. BACKGROUND: Michael Weiss' roots are in Budapest, Hungary. In Hungary, the family was in the leather business, a trade that was passed down through the generations. During the Holocaust, the members of the Weiss family that survived were aided by Raoul Wallenberg. In 1956, the family immigrated to the United States after the Hungarian Revolution. Michael Weiss' father was graduated from Mumford High School, while his mother was graduated from Cass Technical High School. His parents met at a Jewish youth group function. Weiss first lived in Southfield but moved to West Bloomfield when he started first grade. He attended the magnet program for elementary school, Orchard Lake Middle School and will graduate from West Bloomfield High School in June. His Hebrew education began at Beth Achim and continued .4 through the Hebrew High School, affiliated with the United Hebrew Schools. In the fall of 1986, three of his friends, David Tessler, Marc Blackman and Carl Raboi, recruited him to join United Synagogue Youth (USY). He became active in the group organizing ,i14 activities, holding offices, and participating in international leadership seminars. One of his USY trips to Eastern Europe and Israel inspired him to write the essay "Ashes to Ashes," which won 4 regional and national awards and was published in The Jewish News "It was the most personal story I've ever written." Weiss enjoys creative writing and has written competitively since the fourth grade, winning a total of 14 awards. Weiss also excels in other academic and creative areas. He is class valedictorian, a 1989 National Merit Finalist, a bronze medalist in the Michigan Math Competition, a recipient of a University of Michigan Regents Alumni Scholarship and a full tuition scholarship at Wayne State University. , He directed, wrote and acted in the high school drama department. Next year at the University of Michigan, he hopes to write for the Michigan Daily and "make waves?' He also will continue to be active in USY, an experience he feels that has altered 410 his self-image and world. "I'm much more confident about my insecurities."
