But his envelopes promise presents, not Oscars, and the event 13-year-old Paul finds himself at in his fantasy is a ritual of Judaism, not Hollywood. Beaming at the bimah, bar mitzvah boy Pfeiffer looks out at the congregation before him and marvels at the mitz- vah he is about to perform. These are, he says, "Wonder Years" after all. Josh Saviano surely shares those sentiments since he and Pfeiffer are one and the same. Josh, a resident of Essex County in New Jersey, por- trays Pfeiffer in ABC-TV's popular Tuesday night hit "The Wonder Years," which airs at 8:30 p.m. on Channel 7. Josh is coming of age in this coming-of-age series about the '60s. He had his own bar mitzvah back home in New Jersey in March; on a recent Tuesday night, Josh became a man once more in an episode entitled "Birthday Boy." Taping "Birthday Boy" before his actual bar mitzvah suited Josh just fine. "We did the taping a week before I ac- tually had to do my own ser- vice. It made me less ner- vous," he says. "It made me feel more comfortable about what I'd have to do in real life." Not that his reel bar mitz- vah didn't have its own con- flicts. In the episode, Paul and good friend Kevin (Fred Savage), a non-Jew, come to realize the differences in their cultures. Kevin's 13th birth- day is just like any other; Paul's becomes an event. Away from the camera, Josh and Fred don't focus on their differences. "Fred and I are really good friends," he says. Fred, who is Jewish, has his own bar mitzvah coming up in November. Josh had another bar mitz- vah recently. "The Discovery" was part of a series about "The Promise of America," produced by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. "That's two shows I'm doing on the bar mitzvah and then my own," says Josh. "I've waited 13 years for my bar mitzvah, and now I have three of them!" Not that he's complaining. Whether depicting the ritual on television or staging his own for real, Josh, son of Ralph Saviano, a financial consultant, and his wife, Jane, a speech pathologist, finds comfort and meaning in Continued on Page 70 (
