Elton Tribute
Is Scheduled

International opera star
George Shirley has organized
a memorial concert for his
high school music teacher
and mentor, Claire Weimer
Elton, on Saturday at 3 p.m.
in the Recital Hall at the
Detroit Institute of Arts.
Noted pianist Bess Bonnier
will perform in the concert, as
well as Mrs. Elton's grand-
daughter, flutist Elizabeth
Elton. A choir of former
students will sing. Between
musical numbers, Mrs.
Elton's former students will
tell their own special stories
about her.
There is no admission
charge for the concert and the
public is invited, especially
former students of Mrs. Elton.
She taught in the Detroit
Public Schools for 44 years,
from 1924 to 1968. She died
last November.
A scholarship fund in the
name of Claire Weimer Elton
is being established at North-
ern High School by Shirley to
help gifted musical students
continue their studies on the
college and conservatory
level. For information about
the fund, call Shirley,
665-7821.
