School alumnus also is the
understudy for the role of
Cinderella's prince.
Sills' interest in the theater
developed in his youth when
he was "bitten by the bug"
while performing with the
Franklin Community
Players. When he saw that
people liked what he did on
stage, he decided to pursue ac-
ting. At the Cranbrook
School, he produced and ap-
peared in Godspell. He was
graduated from the Universi-
ty of Michigan with a B.A.
degree and received a Master
of Fine Arts degree from the
American Conservatory The-
atre in San Francisco.
His first professional ap-
pearance was in The Fan-
tasticks, staged by the now-
defunct Janus Productions.
He appeared in such pro-
ductions as Henry V, Sunday
in the Park with George,
Dames at Sea, The Impor-
tance of Being Earnest, What
the Butler Saw, Major Bar-
bara, Isn't It Romantic, The
Three Sisters and Company.
Sills appeared in a made-
for-TV movie, Justin Case,
and will be featured in an
episode of "The Cavanaughs."
His favorite role is that of
Leontes in A Winter's Tale,
and his favorite play is
Chekhov's Three Sisters. "I
have a lot of favorites," Sills
said. "I love classical drama.
It's so rich for the audience
and actor."
The role he'd most like to do
is Hamlet, but he'd be open to
musicals or something a little
off the beaten track. "I enjoy
musical theater and things
that are dangerous," Sills
said. "Into The Woods is not
traditional theater as
America knows it. It's on the
cutting edge." The produc-
tion has a plot structure that
doesn't "fit like a normal"
musical, Sills explained. "It
may strike an audience in a
new way. They may hate it."
"I enjoy work that is risky
for the performer (emotional-
ly, physically), where the per-
former has to go on a limb for
it to be successful," he added.
The son of Rhoda and Ar-
chie Sills of Franklin, Sills
hopes to direct as well as
establish a base in New
York's theater district. "It's
what I've always wanted," he
said.
In his spare time, Sills per-
forms in benefits to raise
money for AIDS research. In
between rehearsals while on
a road tour, Sills visits art
museums and enjoys looking
at a city's architecture.
In the near future, Sills will
return to Los Angeles to pur-
sue TV pilots and more
theater work. ❑
