N.J. Synagogue
Is Vandalized

New York (JTA) — Three
boys, ages 8, 9 and 13, last
week ransacked a synagogue
and Hebrew school in
southern New Jersey, ap-
parently to get back at a
neighborhood Jewish youth
with whom they had a
disagreement.
The boys, who cannot be
tried as adults for their
crimes, vandalized Temple
Ohav Shalom in Parlin, N.J.
In addition to ripping and
marking up talleisim and
splashing ink and paint all
over the premises, the boys
scrawled anti-Semitic graffiti
on classroom chalkboards.
The youthful vandals did
not touch the Torahs,
however, because, they told
police, they "knew they were
holy."
"One boy had a disagree-
ment with another boy who
happened to be a member of
the Jewish faith. They got in
here and they went wild," the
prosecutor for Middlesex
County, Alan Rockoff, told
reporters.
At least one parent has
disclaimed there was any
fight, and has brought his
8-year-old to meet with Rab-
bi Robert Port, the
synagogue's spiritual leader.
The boys, all of whom live in
Old Bridge, are not being
identified because of their
age.
