- Beat the heat... to introduce him to synagogue life when he first arrived, his main interests were focused on finding a place to live, a job, and learn- ing English. But when he had settled in a bit, after about a year, and was ready to explore the new horizon of synagogues and Jewish com- munal life, the organized Jewish community had lost interest in him. "Just when I was getting curious, they had given up on me," he said. He recommends concen- trating on providing the newcomers with the basic ab- sorption and resettlement needs first, and then in- troducing them to the range of religious and communal experiences. But others say that if we wait too long, we'll never at- tract the newcomers to Jewish life, particularly in terms of a Jewish education for the children. Either way, it is our respon- sibility to give these Soviet Jews an opportunity to ex- plore their Jewishness and to encourage them to provide their children with a Jewish education. In a very real sense, we are a mirror for the newcomers. -If they see us placing real value on Jewish education, synagogue par- ticipation and organizational life, they may follow our lead and do the same. But if they see us paying lip service to these causes, or simply en- couraging them for others, they will realize soon enough that it is all a sham. Our future and their future are inextricably linked; when we strengthen our own com- mitment to Jewish life, we help the newcomers - and ourselves.
