THE JEWISH NEWS
Since Leider's arrival at
West Bloomfield, he has
directed 18 productions in-
cluding Romeo and Juliet,
Judgement at Nuremberg, a
Western production of Tam-
ing of the Shrew set in New
Mexico in 1840 and an
original production of
Frankenstein. This year, he
directed the musical On a
Clear Day You Can See
Forever.
"I like to pick challenging
shows, productions you
wouldn't see at other high
schools," Leider said. "We
won't do Guys and Dolls and
West Side Story because they
are performed at every other
school."
Leider, a long-time member
of Congregation Beth Shalom
and graduate of Oak Park
High School, will appear in
Newsweek this month.
Although he has no
recollection of his days in col-
lege and high school, Leider
joined the Oak Park High
Class of 1969 reunion
committee.
"One of the reasons I'm
working on the July reunion
is that it's helping me try to
see who people are," Leider
said. "It's kind of ironic that
I was assigned to 'mailing
and lost people' because I'm
always looking for something
out of the past."
Fortunately, Leider's
childhood memories are still
intact. "I clearly remember
celebrating the Jewish
holidays with my family," he
said. "My grandmother and
great-aunt would make huge
Passover seders. I have also
now managed to succe s sfully
reproduce my grandmother's
gefilte fish recipe."
In April, Leider married
Helene Held. He met her
through the Oak Park com-
munity theater in the early
1970s. After living in Califor-
nia for eight years, Held mov-
ed back to Detroit in 1986 and
was instrumental in aiding
Leider's recovery, along with
his parents, Irven and Eileen,
and his brothers.
Leider,
the
To
award
WDIV/Newsweek
meant more than just a piece
of paper.
"The teacher award to me is
a badge of survival," Leider
said. "It symbolizes that I
survived to get to this
point." ❑
