were all those boxes in the
garage! Before I knew it, I had
gone totally blank and skip-
ped a whole page of music.
Rochelle Barr, my accom-
panist, didn't know where to
find me. I just said, 'Oh my
God, I've made a mistake!'
And I started to laugh.
"Then the audience started
to laugh, too — and then they
started to applaud. I ended up
getting a standing ovation. It
was hysterical?'
Forced to take a hiatus from
those concerts and other
types of performances this
spring because of ill health,
Ruby is looking forward to
getting back to the stage as
soon as possible. In the mean-
time, she's keeping in shape
swimming two-three miles a
day at the Jewish Communi-
ty Center pool, running four-
six miles daily, playing rac-
quetball and tennis and put-
tering around in the garden
at her Birmingham home. A
wedding for daughter, Denise,
is also in the offing, along
with visits with grand-
children, Stephen, 7, and
Suzanne, 3, who live in San
Francisco.
None of her three children
sings professionally, although
daughter, Denise, now living
in Aviv, studied ballet and
went on to perform a number
of times on television and on
the stage, and eventually
became a dance therapist.
Ruby's son, Robert, who lives
in San Francisco, is a realtor.
Youngest daughter, Joyce, is a
clinical psychologist in the
Detroit area.
"Music has done so much
for me," says Ruby. "I just
want to go on'singing as long
as I can." ❑

River-themed displays at the
Hart Plaza Cultural/Ethnic
Gallery, as well as tours of
