Lake Branch and Hil-
lel Day School won
first place in their divisions in
Sunday's Israel Knowledge
Quiz Bowl. The quiz bowl was
held as part of the Detroit
Jewish community's celebra-
tion of Israel's 41st birthday.
Members of the Temple
Israel team, competing in the
Hebrew afternoon and Sun-
day school division, were:
Laurie Piper, Jeremy Cohen
and Jennifer Yellin. Their
teacher is Joel Simmer.
The Hillel Day School team,
competing in the day school
division, was comprised of Gil
Feldman, Jonathan Knoll
and Aaron Freilich. Teachers
are Ella Moskowitz and Reva
Thatch.
First place winners receiv-
ed a $250 AMPAL investment
. bond.
Second place in the after-
noon/Sunday school category
was held by a Temple Israel
Religious School team com-
prised of Danielle Wolfe, Mike
Stern and Marci Stern. Tak-
ing third place were Scott
Selfon, Amy Wagner and Jill
Bruss from Congregation
Shaarey Zedek.
Akiva Hebrew Day School
took second place in the day
school category. Team
members were Jossef Ziffer,
Tamar Rosman and Rachel
Traurig.
A total of 12 schools par-
ticipated in the quiz bowl,
coordinated by Monica Yaniv,
an Akiva teacher. Larry
Jackier was the master of
ceremonies.
The quiz was sponsored by
the Israel Program Center of
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion and the Jewish
Educators Council.

Yavneh Plans
Open House

Yavneh Academy, the
Reform Jewish Day School of
Metropolitan Detroit, will
have an open house for in-
terested parents at 6:30 p.m
June 12 in room 333 of the
Maple/Drake Jewish Com-
munity Center.
Scheduled to open Sept. 5,
the day school will begin with
grades kindergarten through
two. To date, nine children
have been enrolled in the day
school.
At the open house, parents
will have an opportunity to
meet the staff. A magician
will entertain and an art
teacher will direct crafts ac-

tivities for children who ac-
company their parents to the
open house.
Construction of the day
school, to be located in what
is now room 333, will begin at
the end of May. A recent deci-
sion by the Yavneh board rul-
ed that no minimum enroll-
ment will be required for the
school to open.
The school will have four
classrooms, multi-purpose
room, offices and restrooms.
In addition to secular and
Jewish subjects, students will
have the opportunity to par-
ticipate in enrichment ac-
tivities, including sports, arts
and crafts, computers, drama
and cooking.
Gigi Fried and Cheryl Litt
are co-chairmen of the open
house. Their committee in-
cludes Jim Jonas, Shirley
Fink, Shari Finsilver, Fran
Ozeran, Carole Kaftan and
Nancy Kaplan.
The community is invited
free of charge. Refreshments
will be served.

Midrasha Marks
Mother's Day

The Midrasha-College of
Jewish Studies, a division of
United Hebrew Schools- will
present a program in honor of
Mother's Day, Sunday at 10
a.m.
Rabbi Amy Zweiback
Levenson of B'nai Yisrael
Reconstructionist Congrega-
tion, South Bend, Ind., will
speak on "Women in
Judaism!' Rabbi Zweiback
Levenson is a graduate of the
Reconstructionist Rabbinical
College and also holds a
Master of Arts degree in
educational administration.
She is the Midwest regional
director for the Federation
of Reconstructionist Congre-
gations and Havurot, a board
member of the Coalition for
the Advancement of Jewish
Education and is widely
published in the field of
Jewish education.
The lecture will take place
in the LaMed Auditorium of
the United Hebrew Schools.
The public is invited, and
there is no charge. For infor-
