Sanders said the students are responsible for all story ideas in the paper. These often reflect what they are studying in school, what's go- ing on in their youth groups and in the temple as well as world events. Once stories are completed, they are set on a computer, printed out and returned to the students. The sixth- graders then lay out and paste up the paper, including selecting artwork to run with their articles. Students work on the paper during class, Sanders said, and each is involved in some aspect of The Scribble's production. Flo Bloch, Temple Shir Shalom education director, said congregants are en- thusiastic about the newslet- ter. "We've even had people who don't have children call- ing up to say how much they like The Scribble." Bloch said the students' newspaper reflects the temple's philosophy that individuals should participate in activities. "This is hands-on ex- perience," she said. "They're learning by doing, and that's our philosophy." ❑ !TORAH PORTION To Count As A Person, One Must Count In Life RABBI MORTON YOLKUT Special to The Jewish News I t is curious that between the festival of Passover and the holiday of Shavuot, the Torah requires the Jew to count days and weeks. In this week's sidra, the commandment of sefira is recorded: "And you shall count for yourselves the morrow of the day of rest, from the day you have brought the omer (sheaf) Emor: Leviticus 21:1-24:23, Ezekiel 44:15-31 of waving, seven complete weeks shall they be." (Leviticus 23:15) Maimonides compares this counting to an individual awaiting the arrival of a dear friend on a certain date who impatiently checks off the days and weeks until his com- ing. So does the Jew count the days from the anniversary of his political and national freedom until the festival celebrating the spiritual birth of his people. The sefira period, then, is a transitional period, a ladder, connecting the two festivals of Passover and Shavuot. In later times, these seven weeks became associated with sad memories for the Morton Yolkut is rabbi of Congregation B'nai David. Jewish people. Terrible calamities, including a devastating plague that destroyed thousands of Rabbi Akiva's disciples, occurred during this time. As a result of these tragic events, the sefira period is observed as a season of semi-mourning; during this time traditional Jews abstain from weddings and other joyous celebrations, except for certain specified days. Yet, these negative aspects of sefira — the observance of moderate mourning during the period — are strictly secondary. The essence of sefira is the counting of time, or better, the sanctifying of time. How many people can truthfully say they know how to count time? For many peo- ple, time is either "killed," "wasted" of "passed." But the days and years of an indivi- dual are too important to be allowed to pass by unnoticed and unrecorded. If a man does not make his years count, then all his labor is in vain. Time must be counted! The Ibrah says of Abraham: "And Abraham was old, ad- vanced in age" (Genesis 24:1). The expression used is ba ba'yamim, literally: he came with his days. His days, in- other words, added up to a comlete sum. None were missing; none were misused. In his old age, he could look back over his life and see that his days and years were filled with accomplishments and productivity for the benefit of Andrew Lloyd Webber's, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA Directed by Harold Prince TORONTO Theatre Weekend Includes 4 eh th • Round Trip Coach • 2 Nights Hotel DBL I • Excellent Seating For "Phantom of the Opera" CALL NOW • LIMITED SPACE au — — — —NEXT DEPARTURES— — — — (DEC. 29-1) (JAN. 5-7) (JAN. 12-14) (JAN. 19-21) (FEB. 2-4) (FEB. 9-11 (FEB. 16-18) (FEB. 23-25) (MAR. 2-4) LES MISERABLES - Theatre Weekends In" "Acclaim Jerusalem in Prose and Paint" A Student Art Exhibition Celebrating: "YOM YERUSHALAYIM" The Detroit Zionist Federation in cooperation with the Jewish Educators Council is pleased to spon- sor this contest and exhibition to help students deepen their understanding of Israel in a creative way while sharing their artistic impres- sion with the community.
