Made In Israel Products
Listed In BBYO Booklet

KIMBERLY LIFTON

Staff Writer

S

mash ball — an Israeli
made paddle ball
game for the beach —
can be purchased at all
metropolitan Detroit
American Eagle stores.
Israeli dolls with sales tags
rest comfortably atop the
shelves of Chocolatissimo in
West Bloomfield. And canvas
book bags — made in Israel —
are for sale at The Banana
Republic.
The businesses are among
150 local stores carrying
Israeli products that were
targeted by the B'nai B'rith
Youth Organization for a pro-
gram designed to bring Israel
a bit closer to Michigan.
As part of the project, call-
ed BBYO Can Make A Dif-
ference, BBYO chapters can-
vassed local merchants and
compiled a draft of a booklet
listing businesses that sell
Israeli products. Menibers
distributed the leaflets dur-
ing Sunday's Israeli In-
dependence Day festivities at
the Maple/Drake Jewish
Community Center.
"It informs people that
Israeli products are out
there," said Adele Lewin,
BBYO assistant director.
"Overall, it was an excellent
idea."
BBYO officials coordinated
the project with the
American-Israel Chamber of
Commerce of Michigan and
the American-Israel Educa-
tion Institute. Fresh Air
Society Executive Director
Sam Fisher, who works with
the education institute, and
American/Israel Chamber of
Commerce Executive Direc-
tor Shelly Jackier said the

project could make a positive
impact on Israel's economy. It
creates public awareness,
Fisher said.
The booklet is not as
specific as coordinators had
wanted. Several storekeepers
told the teens they carried
Israeli products, yet declined
to offer specifics. For example,
The Limited, a specialty
clothing shop for women, is
listed as carrying Israeli
made clothes. No brands are
cited.
And some Hallmark card
stores are listed as carrying
cards — with no brand names.

BBYO chapters
canvassed local
merchants and
compiled a draft of
a booklet.

Liz Greenberg, a Michigan
regional vice president for
B'Nai B'rith Girls, who co-
chaired the project with Rose
AZA member David Pollack,
said the teens didn't get full
cooperation from all
storekeepers.
The leaflet, she said, is a
first draft. Greenberg said she
hopes the organization will
complete the project.
Meanwhile, BBYO board
members recently agreed to
continue working on an Israel
project. In addition, B'nai
B'rith Girls plan to elect a
Judaism chair.
The booklet culminates
nearly five months of work.
The teens also taped a five-
minute documentary, which
explains on video how the
project transpired. 1:1
