U.S. Applauds
Move By PLO
Washington (JTA) - The
State Department on Monday
welcomed Yassir Arafat's con-
demnation of an Iranian of-
ficial's call last week to kill
five Americans or other
Westerners for every Palesti-
nian killed by Israeli soldiers.
The Palestine Liberation
Organization leader was
quoted as saying that he
totally rejects statements
made Friday by All Akbar
Hashemi Rafsanjani.
A PLO spokesperson also
was quoted as saying that the
organization had rejected
"this poisoned advice to the
Palestinian people to commit
international terrorism
against innocent people."
"We welcome the
statements" by Arafat and
his spokespersons critical of
Rafsanjani, State Depart-
ment deputy spokesman
Richard Boucher. "They ac-
cord with the PLO's renuncia-
tion of terrorism and our
understanding that it would
denounce terrorism wherever
it occurred."
"We call on all members of
the international community
to denounce Rafsanjani's
statements and to take action
to isolate Iran until it is ready
to act responsibly," Boucher
added.
On Friday, the State
Department warned that the
United States would hold the
Iranian leadership responsi-
ble if anyone responds to Raf-
sanjani's call.
IDF Illegally
Took Cards
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The at-
torney general's office admit-
ted to the High Court of
Justice last week that Israeli
soldiers have been acting il-
legally in confiscating identi-
ty cards from residents of the
territories, in order to force
them to pay taxes or erase
protest slogans.
The attorney general's of
told the justices that it
would stop the practice.
A representative for the at-
torney general said that
orders against confiscating
the cards had been issued in
the past. However, the orders
were not followed, he said,
because there is little contact
between the attorney
general's office and the
soldiers in the field.
The military advocate-
general's office has said it will
issue a special order, within
the next two weeks, defining
the cases in which it is per-
missible to confiscate identi-
ty cards.
