FLOOR SAMPLE SELL-OFF! THURSDAY, FRIDAY & SATURDAY ONLY! "Judge" before his name wore a black robe and the other Hoffman wore manacles. And Hoffman's Yippie street theater politics calm out of another theater, one with distinctly Jewish roots — vaudeville. Just when ev- eryone was taking himself too, tot, seriously along came a wacko, baggy-pants come- dian — Abbie Hoffman, Ladies and Gentleman — and a pinch of pretense and sobriety would be deflated out of them. Even his heroes were Jewish; three guys who, in Hoffman's words, decided "to go for broke" — Spinoza, Marx and Freud. And he had briefly considered dedicating his • seventh book, Square- Dancing in the Ice Age to Anne Frank. The book was a collection of his writings while underground. He said he had developed a great ad- miration for the young diarist Oc during his own years in hiding, "but," he said, didn't think my book serious enough to link- her name with it." Hoffman was the classic "non-Jewish Jew," the fellow who rejects institutionalized movements, who rejects in- stitutionalization of any kind. His tactics were suited to the times. The terrible anarchy of Vietnam had bred a puckish, wild, free-for-all anarchy in those who opposed the war. But as tempers cooled and 0). Yippies turned into Yuppies and VWs into BMWs, Abbie Hoffman fell just a bit out of step with the times. He became, as the kids say, "history," or, at least, a part of it. History. That's where Hoff- mail is. Relegated to the dustbin thereof. And to the dustbin of cheap nostalgia and easy memories, of tie- dyed merchandising and Big Chill flicks, of yellowing issues of Ramparts magazine and mildewed sandals at the rear of the closet of someone who now lives in the sort of house that he would have snickered at a decade ago. Unless. Unless something more meaningful can be made out of the life of so- meone who called himself "an American dissident" and who grew into an age when dissidence and ideology had little calling; who turned a lively and raucous sense of humor into a sometimes effec- tive, but often baffling political tool; who thought that today's college students — despite their yearnings for cash and materialism — could still see beyond themselves. That shouldn't be too hard, should it? ❑ EV ERY BED R OOM 50 OFF. LOOKING FOR BEDROOM FURNITURE? Then you can't afford to miss this special one-time-only 3- day event.
