AMERICAN ISRAEL CORPORATION
The Michigan Department
of Education reported this
week that all of Michigan's
Jewish day schools have com-
plied with its requirement to
report whether or not they
employ state-licensed
teachers.
According to the depart-
ment, Hillel Day School,
Yeshiva Beth Yehudah, Akiva
Hebrew Day School and the
Lubavitch Cheder Oholei
Yosef Yitzchok all have filed
with the state. Non-
compliance with the state's
request for information could
result in a school's closing.
Regulation' of religious
schools • has been a decade-
long battle between state
government and the private
institutions. Enforcement of
the requirement is backed by
a 1988 U.S. Supreme Court
decision.
Akiva, Hillel and the
yeshiva all require their
teachers of English subjects
to be state-certified. Hebrew
teachers at Akiva and the
yeshiva hold certfication from
other agencies, such as the
National Society of Hebrew
Day Schools. Some Hillel
Hebrew teachers hold state
certification while others hold
certification from another
source. Information about the
Lubavitch day school was not
available.
