Immigrants

Continued from Page 7

No! Some are coming around,
and it may take them a long
time. Some may never do so,
but their children may (it
took Moses 40 years of
waiting for the new genera-
tion to grow up so that the
memories of the old genera-
tion would be erased).
When I help someone, I
don't expect anything in
return. I do it because I know
there is a need and I can
make a difference. Believe me,
the Soviet Jews are as ap-
preciative as anyone can be.
But please, don't expect
miracles. While saving lives,
don't try to hang a new yoke
where the old one used to be.

You are saving lives. Please
do not allow what happened
to the German Jews in the
1930s happen to the Soviet
Jews.

As I was drafting this letter;
Doris, my 12-year-old, asked
what I was doing. I told her
that I was trying to explain
why so many immigrants did
not become religious, did not
change the way they lived.
"Well,"_she said, "because you
did not know how to live dif-
ferently?"
That came from a child,
who is not in her teens yet! If
she understood, so can
others. ❑
