Shame on the leaders of the
Detroit Jewish community.
Why do they insist on
rewriting Jewish history? If
they want to give money to
the Russian Jews coming to
America then they should do
so for humanitarian reasons.
But they should stop justify-
ing their actions by compar-
ing the plight of the Russians
now in Italy to that of the
Jews in Europe before, during
and after World War II.
No doubt they know that
such an analogy is totally
false. Perhaps they feel that
the ends justify the means
and so, in order to appeal to
our guilty consciences, they
try to convince us that the
situation is the same. Well, it
isn't. Although they know
this, there are many others
who do not.
These people will conclude
that if the plight of the Rus-
sians is the same as the Euro-
pean Jews of World War II
then the converse must also
be true. That is that the Six
million Jews perished in the
Holocaust as a result of their
preference to go to the U.S.
rather than Israel (the U.S.
refused them and they didn't
want to go to Israel so they
perished in Europe).
Of course, this is totally
ridiculous. These Jews had no
choice. No country in the
world would let them in, in-
cluding British Mandate
Palestine.
So, though the leadership
may know the truth, their
continued use of this analogy
can only help those who deny
the Holocaust and want to
rewrite our history. In the
name of the six million who
had nowhere to go, I appeal to
them to please find an alter-
native fund-raising
technique.

Your photo essay on Israel's
41st birthday (May 5) was in-
deed interesting. However, on
Page 28 in regards to two
Arabs the caption was in er-
ror in stating the older one
was handling his prayer
beads.
Not so; they are "worry
beads" — common in the Mid-
dle East, Greece and Turkey
and have no religious
significance whatsoever.
Your publication is well
written and informative.

Christ," thereby tacitly endor-
sing it, sadly speaks for itself.
It is truly regrettable that
such a great university would
send such a disturbing
message at commencement:
that separation of church and
state isn't what it used to be.

Continued from Page 6

I recently witnessed a clear
and unequivocal violation of
the separation of church and
state.
On Saturday, April 29,
while attending graduation
ceremonies at the University
of Michigan in Ann Arbor, I
could not help but notice that
a prayer was given. I cer-
tainly would have no objec-
tion to a non-denominational
prayer, if given in good taste.
When the reverend deliver-
ing the prayer repeatedly
thanked God for many of the
good fortunes enjoyed by
these graduating students, I
began to feel somewhat
uneasy. When the reverent
specifically thanked "Our
Lord Jesus Christ," I knew he
had clearly crossed the line.
The University of Michigan
is a state-sponsored institu-
tion with a constitutional
obligation not to favor any
one religion, particularly at a
public commencement
ceremony.
University of Michigan
President Dr. James J.
Duderstadt gave an im-
pressive and inspiring com-
mencement address. It was
what he failed to say, however,
that disturbed me.
fact that
Dr.
The
Duderstadt made no mention
of the Reverend's improper in-
vocation of "Our Lord Jesus
