uestion: When is a
singles group not
necessarily a singles

group?
Answer: When it's J.E.M.S.,
the singles group sponsored
by Temple Israel.
The organization, which
claims a mailing list of about
125, usually says its name
means "Jews who Enjoy
Meeting Singles."
. But tonight, when it -holds
its first Shabbat service that
includes both engaged and
married couples as well as
singles, the acronym will
stand for "Jews who Enjoy
Mingling and Schmoozing,"
according to Sherrie Stern,
the Singles coordinator.
The 8 p.m. service for young
adults in the Leslie R.
Schmier Family Chapel will
be led by Stacie Schiff
Fischer, with congregants'
participation welcomed. An
Oneg Shabbat will follow.
Young singles "can bring
along friends that happen to
be married, if they want to,"
said Stern. "We had some
single persons with married
friends and so we felt it might
make singles.feel more relax-
ed to have some events with
married or engaged couples.
It seems to take the edge off
for singles sometimes.
"Our singles program aims
to provide an opportunity for
young people to get together
in a Jewish setting, within a
Jewish context, with input
from Jewish professionals,"
she said. •
Rabbi Paul M. Yedwab of
Temple Israel said J.E.M.S.
"is sort of in the middle of a
transition. It's not meant to
be exclusively a singles group,
although essentially it still is
for singles.
"It was never intended to be
a 'meet market', but rather a

want to do fun and • educa-
tional things," he said.
"We have a couple of engag-
ed couples who still enjoy

seems to be, do people feel
