Moreover, the trees have interesting
shapes when covered with foliage
during the summer and even while
naked during the winter.
It's fun to watch the crabapple
buds change shadings as they open.
Red buds may produce pink or white
flowers. Some trees boast double
blooms, others single.
In some varieties, even the color of
the foliage changes as seasons pro-
gress. "Baskalong," for instance,
starts out a deep purple that changes
to bronze green in summer and then
turns reddish in the fall.
Deciding which crabapple tree to
plant isn't easy since there are more
than 75 species, varieties and culti-
vars currently listed in nursery cata-
logs, and more hybrids appearing
every year.

four basic forms: low and wide (like
Sargent crab), narrow and upright
(like "Van Eseltine" crab), vase or V-
shaped (tea crab), and picturesque
or weeping ("Red Jade" crab).
For plentiful flowers and fruit, plant
crabapple trees in full sun.
Trees that bear plenty of fruit offer
gardeners another bonus. As the
crabapples ripen in late summer and
fall, birds find them a wonderful
source of food. Robins, cedar wax-
wings and pheasants have been
known to hang around until the fruit
is gone.
As beautiful as they are, some
crabapple trees are prone to dis-
eases like apple scab and fireblight.
The amount of rainfall and spring
temperatures will determine your
tree's susceptibility to disease. So
choose disease-resistant varieties;
your local nursery can help you.
Why do the pealike purple-pink
blooms of the redbud stand out so
dramatically? Because the bark is
black and the leaves have not yet
