HOME
Comfortable clutter best describes
the room where Tobocman loves to
work at his own drafting table. Oak
book cases house many of Laurie's
treasured books, including her com-
plete set of the Oxford English Dic-
tionary. It also holds the television and
music system.
A black herringbone couch and
love seat frame one side of the room,
where the book case beneath the
window holds glass cube lights, an
old English tea caddy, and an anti-
que English menorah. A vivid acrylic
painting by Ray Fleming in primary
colors adorns the wall. A black
leather chair completes the setting.
Off the foyer is a dramatic black
powder room with black silk fabric on
the walls and silver vases on the
black marble vanity. A magnificent art
deco mirror hangs over the toilet.
On the landing up the stairs to the
three bedrooms are two old Moroc-
can screens, which came to the mar-
riage with Irv. The upstairs is
carpeted in a black and gray Berber
tweed. One bedroom is designed to
house whichever child is there at the
time, and another is an office with a
couch that opens to a double bed.
It comes as no surprise that the
master bedroom is done in black and
gray, with a black walnut dresser and
black and gray silk spread. A book
case of wood and acryllic over gray
mirror houses silver objects and fami-
ly picures in various shapes and
sizes.
In the corner, next to a carved
rosewood Chinese table, sits a gray
mohair chair. A storage unit built in
across from the bed holds the TV as
well as books on architecture and in-
terior design. Lovely crystal and glass
objects adorn the vanity in the
elegant gray marble master bath.
The best part of the master suite
is the picture window.
The openness and simplicity of
their home, along with the elegant
furnishings, offer a stunning
showcase for their beautiful art and
important collectables.
At the end of the tour, Tobocman
offers the following advise to those in-
terested in building a home. "Find a
good architect, and listen to him.
