The Corvette Bed

ers of national stature," project direc-
tor Michael Coughlin explains the
choice, adding that the men were
paid for their work.
Their job was complicated be-
cause the pair did not have access
to the furnishings they would use for
their part of the project. During the
restoration work, these items were
stored in a D.C. warehouse and it was
difficult, if not impossible, to even get
a glimpse at everything.
The results of the restoration pro-
ject are not on view to the public.
Unlike other government buildings,
Blair House is not open to the public
for tours. But such knowledgeable
sources as Architectural Digest are
impressed, writing that "Instead of an
arid reconstruction, Blair House is
warm and very American, yet digni-
fied, as befits the presidential guest
quarters."
So, too, apparently are the guests
who have resided at Blair House
since it reopened. 'We've had numer-
ous heads of state stay here and their
response has been overwhelmingly
favorable," says Michael Coughlin.
'We even received praise from the
head of the Elysee Palace (in Paris),
who came with (French President
Francois) Mitterand. I found that very
flattering." 7

ant to give a room a new look,
but can't afford new furniture
or carpeting? Try painting
your walls. If you've been living with
basic, often boring, white or off-white
for too long, you'll be amazed at what
color can do to change the mood of
your room.
You can make a soft, subtle state-
ment with pale pastels, or use the
primary colors for a bright, vivid look.
Here are two looks to try if you want
something unusual. For a fun, out-
doorsy look, paint your ceiling blue
and then apply clouds with sponges
dipped in white paint. Walls can be
the same blue or any other color
a light pink or apricot would set off
the blue nicely.
