an actor in a stroke or two. It is a stroke of good fortune to be captured by Hirschfeld, says his admirers, many of whom showed up at a party this past summer to toast and praise the man. "I still surprise myself," says Hirschfeld, a man of modesty and considerable talents. "I never suspected that I would be accepted on such a national scale" He sees his talent as one way "to invent your _ own, world." It's Al's world, and welcome to it . . . Not all have liked the welcoming commit- tee. Alan Funt reportedly chafed at the artist's caricature of him, saying that the resemblance was more suitable for a gorilla than the creator of "Candid Camera." Hirschfeld was just as can- did in his retort. "I cannot im- prove on what God created," said the artist. But others approved of Hirschfeld's work — from Elia Kazan to Eli Wallach to Madonna. Indeed actors have become an extended family for Hirschfeld, whose own daughter, Nina, provided an important early audience. A Hirschfeld "Nina" plus a number in the corner of one of his caricatures sends theatergoers scrambling to see how he has incorporated his daughter's name in the work. "It's insane," admits Hirschfeld, who put his daughter's name in a sketch 43 years ago to honor her birth. "Everybod wants to know where the Nina is." Everybody knows where Hirschfeld is — busy at work at his barber's chair, creating the magic of theater in pen and ink. "I enjoy what I do," he says, matter-of-factly. "I tell people if you don't like what you're doing, go out and open a deli somewhere" Life is more than corned beef and wry comments. But being famous at 85 is no mystery, says the artist. "The whole trick," says Al Hirschfeld, "is to stay alive."
