Rabbit is good news for
Kaye, who resides in England
these days. He muses that he
could have used a rabbit's foot
early on in life when, lean
times in the Bronx had people
leaning on each other for
help.
But poverty in a way
enriched his outlok, he
claims. "It taught me to ap-
preciate things and people. It
is not a pleasant time to look
back on, but it served as a
guide to go throughlife. If I
can help people now, I will!'
Indeed, says Kaye, tzedakah
is very important to him. He
would rather give than get.
But he has been getting a
lot of attention as Marvin in
Roger Rabbit, the biggest film
hit of the year. "I enjoyed
myself so much," he says. "I
got such a kick out of working
with Bob Hoskins!' whose
valiant detective, Eddie
Valiant, tries to solve the
hare-brained murder mystery
that is Roger Rabbit.
"The toughest part in this
film was working to thin air,"
says Kaye. The animated
characters that keep this film
hopping were added after the
live action was shot. "I'll tell
you, Jessica was my
shapeliest co-star," says Kaye
of the bunny's bodacious wife
and the film's fatal attraction,
whose siren song has "four-
alarm" written all over it.
Kaye isn't so sure his own
two children would appreciate
this children's movie for all
ages. "We have two little girls
— basset hounds, Cagney and
Lacey," he says.
What Kaye appreciated
about the film was its sense
of fun. "I'm not surprised it's
a hit. It was wonderful to
work on."
Not that that has been his
only work recently, Kaye per-
formed in a special musical
program taped for broadcast
at the White House, and also
filmed The Big Knife for PBS.
And then there's always the
obvious sequel to Rabbit,
although how a deceased
Marvin Acme would return is
a question that only
Hollywood could answer.
"It would be marvelous!"
says Kaye, laughing. "Maybe
I could come back as an
angel, sitting on Roger's
shoulder. Look, if they do a se-
quel and there's room for me,
I'd like it. The film was such
a wonderful family feeling."
