For Military Medal

DANNY RASKIN

Local Columnist

I

n August, 1945, Private
Bernie (Bela) Schlesinger,
now a local jeweler, sat
eating goulash in a
Hungarian cottage to which
he had been invited . . .
Hiding in the cottage was a
Hungarian general, whom
Bernie captured along with
his 100 forest-hidden men .. .
Friend Karl Berg says they
probably preferred surrender-
ing to the Americans instead
of the oncoming Russians.
Seventeen years later, in
1962, the U.S. government
decided to give Bernie a
bronze star . . . Then another
27 years more, April, 1989, he
finally received a certificate
for the medal.
Karl, here with wife Mollie,
both live in Coronado, Calif.,
where they moved eight years
ago . . . He turned 76 March
15, had a triple bypass, wears
a pacemaker and plays tennis
daily, plus swimming and
surfing every day.
No, Bernie still doesn't have
the Bronze Star . . . May get
it in about another six or
seven months . . . or so he is
told.
GET WELL wishes . . . to
Lee Gurwin . . . on her recent
operation . . . to Leo Kaplan

after his operation . . . and to

SHOPPERS at the Board-
walk on Orchard Lake Road
will have chance to support
Children's Hospital of
Michigan by buying T-shirts
starting this Monday . . .
They feature a design in-
spired by the artwork of a
Children's Hospital patient
. . . All sizes are $12 and pro-
ceeds benefit the hospital.
Last year, Boardwalk mer-
chants raised over $3,000 .. .
For more information, contact
Jan Loveland at Children's
Hospital, 745-5373, or Bluma
Siegal, Boardwalk marketing

MAIL DEPT. ... "Our
brother and brother-in-law,
91-year-old Marshall Abrams,
is in the Arnold Nursing
Home and has been for the
past year. During that time
and for many years before, the
wonderful and caring ladies
of the Temple Beth El
Sisterhood with the able
assistance of Rabbi Cook have
given of their time and money

to put on a beautiful Passover
service and a great
Chanukah party for the
Jewish residents and others
who care to come and share in
the celebrations. We feel very
strongly that these kind
deeds should not go unnotic-
ed by our community.

"Also, the Arnold Home is
in dire need of a billiard table
for the retired residents. They
will surely put it to good use
and brighten their days. If
anyone has a table not being
used and would like to donate,
please contact Mary Carbello
at the home, 531-4001."
