HOW'S THIS for a phone
number . . . 557-8,9,10 .. .
That's the one given for
reopening by Dimitri's of
Southfield, which is shooting
for May 10 in hopes of being
open by Mother's Day four
days later . . . The complete
Greek cuisine (no more fool-
ing around with other ethnic
dishes) will be by the same ex-
ecutive chef who made the
original Dimitri's of South-
field such a huge success
when it stuck with Greek din-
ing (Jules Fayne of HMH&F
Travel, can't wait for those
lamb chops) . . . There'll also
be an extensive seafood menu
plus steaks.
Dimitri's of Southfield,
Southfield Road just north of
10 Mile, will be open for lunch
and dinner every day except
Sunday . . . and entirely a
Syros family operation now
. . . Dimitri, wife Naomi and
sons Nick and Paul.
Renovations are being com-
pleted . . . and the Gary Rose
Gypsy Trio will play strolling
music . . . Future plans call
for dancing at Dimitri's of
Southfield . . . which should
be good music to many.
IT WAS ONE of the nicest
experiences I've ever had —
and the food was fabulous,
too!" said one of the non-
Jewish cast members of
Broadway Bound.
The Jewish and non-Jewish
cast members sat down to a
complete Passover seder on
the second night . . . held at
a house where four of the cast
are staying, and it couldn't
start until after that even-
ing's performance ended.
Peter Birkenhead, who
plays Eugene, conducted the
seder which the other Jewish
cast members, Joel Leffert, Ir-
win Charone and Carol Har-
ris, said he did so well .. .
Peter explained all the
rituals, assisted by Joel and
they sang Hebrew songs .. .
The Haggadot had been got-
ten from one of the local
supermarkets.
Their meal was prepared by
Carol, Peter and Joel and in-
cluded all the traditional
foods, chicken soup, matzah
balls, chicken and trimmings.
Cecile Mann, who is not
Jewish, remarked that it was
really like a family obser-
vance, and how perfectly fit-
ting because of their roles in
the play.
Broadway Bound, the third
play in Neil Simon's trilogy,
revolves around the home and
family of Simon after World
War II as he attempts to
become a successful writer
. . . It runs through this Sun-
day at the Birmingham
Theatre.
AS A 6-YEAR-OLD, little
Nancy Rovner played the role
of an Indian princess in the
annual spring play at Detroit-
Country Day School . . . The
daughter of Charlotte and
Mark Rovner didn't know it
then but this was the begin-
ning of an entry into show
business.
Today, 60 plays later, both
amateur and professional,
Nancy is many times noted as
queen of musical comedy din-
ner theater hereabouts.
She had to make a few stops
. . . to marry barrister Don
Gurwin, June 29, 1965 .. .
and have two children . . .
before getting back on the
stage.
Fourteen years ago, she
formed Nancy Gurwin Pro-
ductions, and Annie Get Your
Gun, May 6, 9:30 p.m.; May 7,
7 p.m.; May 11, 7:30 p.m.; and
May 13, 9:30 p.m., at the
Jewish Community Center
Nancy and Annie
mix well.
on Maple and Drake, is
number 26.
Before forming her own,
Nancy did dinner theater for
other companies . . . Annie
Get Your Gun is a straight
show . . . not dinner theater
. . . The seemingly "lost art"
of dinner theater, usually a
highly-viable ticket, will
hopefully be resumed again
by Nancy.
PUT ON YOUR thinking
caps . . . and come up with a
delicatessen sandwich that's
never been thought of before
. . . How about the one you're
always wondering why
nobody has?
The Jewish News is having
a contest to name a Jackie
Mason Sandwich . . . Make up
one and bring it May 21 to
Plaza Deli, Northwestern and
12 Mile, where the judges .. .
Bob Talberg, Detroit Free
Press; Chef Remy Berdy, Star
of Detroit; Chef Peter Loren,
Opus One; Larry Snider, head
of V.H.&W. food brokers; and
I . . . will check out the taste
bud newies at 2 p.m.
First 50 entrants will be
given a two-pound Isaac
Gellis kosher salami and a jar
of Isaac Gellis mustart .. .
Winner will have the sand-
wich on Plaza's menu . . . plus
front-row tickets to see Jackie
Maxon, May 24, at the Palace
. . . and opportunity of going
backstage to give him his
newly-named sandwich in
person.
You'd be surprised at what
concoctions go over . . . Who
ever thought years back at
Ben & George on Dexter that
the coming out of corned beef
and chopped liver would ever
go over? . .. Be kind to the
judges . . . Please, no pastrami
and anchovies. 1=1
