ting it forward all the same,"
said Raniero la Valle, who
devised the initiative to break
the Middle East impasse.
Its basis, he explained in an
interview in the Turin
newspaper La Stampa, "is to
join Israel and the Palesti-
nians together with the E.C.
countries, which gradually
are doing away with formal
boundaries, so that many
states will exist on one united
territory."
While la Valle admits the
possibility is farfetched, he
maintained that "we are ap-
pealing to a still greater
realism.
"Who would have imagined
only a few years ago what is
happening in the Soviet
Union?" he asked. "Who
could have foreseen the
dismantling of missiles, the
withdrawal from Af-
ghanistan, the disarming of
the Contras?"
Cost Of Living
In Israel Rises
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The cost-
of-living index rose by a mere
0.5 percent in March, the
Central Bureau of Statistics
announced last week.
Using a 1987 base of 100,
the consumer price index now
stands at 132.8.
The March increase
brought the inflationary rate
for the first three months of
1989 to 6.9 percent. This
relatively high rate reflects
the effects of the devaluation
at the beginning of the year
and seasonal price increases.
The coming months are ex-
pected to show lower in-
creases, providing hope that
Israel will attain single-digit
inflation for 1989, for the first
time in many years.
Rebbe Honored
By New York
New York (JTA) — Governor
Mario Cuomo issued a pro-
clamation last week, in con-
junction with a special resolu-
tion passed in the New York
State Legislature, paying
tribute to Rabbi Menachem
Schneerson, the Lubavitcher
rebbe, on the occasion of his
87th birthday.
The resolutions, which were
introduced by Sen. John Mar-
chi and Assemblyman Ho-
ward Lasher, designate 87
days of education in recogni-
tion of the rebbe's efforts in
the cause of education
worldwide.
Also in honor of the rebbe's
birthday, both houses of the
New York Legislature were
opened by Rabbi Shmuel But-
man, director of the Luba-
vitch Youth Organization.
