Andrew Lloyd Webber's,

THE PHANTOM
OF THE OPERA

passed away, did the Palesti-
nians get anything? No. Then
let them shake hands with
the murderers . ."
Clearly, Mrs. Sadat is say-
ing that if she, with her loss,
can be forgiving of Arafat and
his PLO followers, so, too, can
the Israelis, with their losses.
But there lingers, she well
knows, the problem of trust.
Her husband,who star-tied
the world by flying to Israel
six years after he made war
on it, "was a person who
everyone trusted, even the
people who hated him. He
was very straightforward. He
was to the point, very open,
very sincere, very honest. The
problem now," she said, refer-
ring to the recent flurry of
peace overtures for the Mid-
dle East, "is with Israel. After
all that happened, they have
to trust Arafat. Let Shamir
give him a chance. We have to
forget about the past and
start a new era with an open
heart and an open mind. If we
don't do this, we will never
reach peace."
To many, for Israel to trust
Arafat is equivalent to Jews
sitting down to tea and a cozy
chat with Hitler outside the
gas chambers of Auschwitz.
And even Mrs. Sadat, who
has met Arafat, knows that,
in the past, Arafat was not
fully trustworthy: "He did not
keep his word to my husband
a few times." But now, she
suggests, the times are dif-
ferent. The Palestinians have
finally learned, she says, that
what her husband did — rec-
ognize Israel, assure that it
will have safe, secure borders
— is the only road to peace.
And, she recalls, her husband
himself predicted that it
would take the rest of the
Arab world a decade to realize
the wisdom of his ways. Now,
in 1989, which marks the
10th anniversary of the Camp
David peace accords between
Israel and Egypt, the decade
is up.
If nothing else, Mrs. Sadat
is confident. Confident that
someone can, as her husband
tried, seize the day and still
the war-stirred waters of the
Middle East. Confident that
her husband's legacy has a
vitality and a profound mean-
ing for the world. Confident
. that sheer confidence — and
