B'nai Moshe To Celebrate
Ralph's 40 Years Of Service

ALAN HITSKY

Associate Editor

B

oard member Dr. Mel
Friedman uses a grad-
ing system for b'nai
mitzvah at Congregation
B'nai Moshe. The youngster
is either fair, good, or he's
been "Ralphed."
The highest grade is reserv-
ed for youngsters who have
been tutored by Shalom
Ralph, B'nai Moshe's sexton.
He will be honored at a
dinner-dance May 21 for 40
years of service to the
congregation.
That service goes far
beyond "teaching already my
kids' kids." It may mean step-
ping in unrehearsed on a
Saturday morning to chant
the haftara in place of an ill
adult congregant. The slow,
melodic, each-syllable-clearly-
heard Ralph style has become
familiar music to the
congregation.
Some members speculate
their sexton developed his
style through supervising
B'nai Moshe's daily minyans,
leading Kaddish in a clear,
friendly way that is inviting
for those unfamiliar with the
prayer service.
Until a few years ago, when

Shalom Ralph:
More than a shammes.

declining membership took
its toll, the congregation had
daily back-to-back morning
minyans under Ralph's super-
vision to accomodate
members' work schedules.
The sexton's role continues to
be overseeing the service and,
just • as important, the
breakfast which follows.
He is also the congrega-
tion's official greeter, usually
one of the first to welcome a
newcomer to services, matter-
of-factly helping a stranger

feel at ease while putting on
tefillin or finding a coat for so-
meone unfamiliar with B'nai
Moshe's etiquette. "Good fit!,"
exclaims Ralph after mat-
ching a green plaid sport coat
- arms three inches short -
to a shirt-sleeved visitor wear-
ing navy blue slacks.
After daily services, he can
be seen in the parking lot
shared by B'nai Moshe and
Emanu-El, giving lef-
tover bread to the sea gulls
who have become as much a
fixture as their benefactor.
On Shabbat, when the
rIbrah is returned to the holy
ark, Ralph trails the proces-
sion around the sanctuary.
Veteran congregants and
children who shake his hand
often are left with a piece of
hard candy.
"Shalom (pronounced
Yiddish-style, Sholem) is
more than just the shammes,"
says congregant Nate Roth,
who has worked with Ralph
as synagogue gabbai and
former chairman of its ritual
committee. "Shalom is
everything the synagogue
and Yiddishkeit are supposed
to be."
Ralph's mother died in his
native Poland when Ralph
was 3. His father, a yeshivah
